Is India Safe For Women?

india taj mahal rapeWe recently thought of traveling to India to see the birth place of Hinduism, Buddhism and many of the most profound explorations of human thoughts.  But then I see all the rapes of children & tourists in the news in the last year.

We decided its really not safe at all to travel there (particularly for women).  I just wonder why there is so much happening now.  And for god’s sake Why children??  How could this happen?     I got curious and started looking at actual statistics:

rape – courtesy of

The numbers of indexmundi come from United Nations Office on Drugs & Crime.

…number of rapes reported to police per 100,000 inhabitants. According to the UN data, the country with the highest rate of reported rapes is Botswana (92.9), while the country with the lowest rate is Egypt (0.1).

India is not the top the “rape statistics”.  This may be due to lack of reporting that its not high on the list.  And perhaps the shock of the recent attacks (children raped to death and violent protests) is what is giving India so much international attention.

Since Indian women are putting a stop to these horrible crimes, the media is anxious to watch history take shape.

Is India Safe For Women?  No.  They seem to be selecting “soft targets” or people that cannot defend themselves.  Then they overpower them with many and then leave the woman for dead.  The cases are happening in the poor areas of India.  Its a shame because India has such an amazing culture.  But I will never take the women I love there and if i do go it will be to kick someone ass.

I hope humanity to get it together on this.  Sometimes I am not so sure.

    Dear Traveller,

Its a great pain for me to read your above post as an Indian. Trust me, its more of media hype, rather than facts

Our problem in India is, excessive democracy. A democracy being enjoyed by less educated crowd who could not make their own rules and mis-interpreted democracy to a rule less life

Its the excessive democracy of Indian media, which makes them hunt for spicy news items and keep showing only those for days and weeks to increase their TRP

Its the fascination towards western awards that some movie makers, go out to the poorest of all streets in India and make a film to win oscar. While doing so, they don’t even care, how much bad name that will bring to India as a whole, and there sheer concern is their own award

India is a vast country with billions of people and is much below in rape statistics @ 1.8/100,000

There are hundreds of countries above it and just a few below

This doesn’t mean I am justifying its position, what I am only trying to say is, that India is still not at all a place where you should be afraid of travelling with your female friend(s). The police machinery takes instant actions and that too for foreigner they are very concerned and caring

Feel free to come to India with your gf / friends and enjoy the heritage we have

While I agree that the media sometimes makes things sound 10x worse than they are, in this case we are talking about women and children were raped to death. I am not sure sure how the media can hype that.

While the cases that are mentioned are the same one repeated over and over in the media, it may be the frequency of the occurrence that was most alarming.

Thank you for your comment and optimism. I cannot express how incredible I think the Indian culture is to me. I know things will get better as the poverty is reigned in more in India.

I am agree with Ashwani. I am 28 and been last 7 years I am living in Toronto, I born and brought up in india and compring the safety and security for travelers in india and Canada I have to say it’s 7/10 in india compare to canada. And about the rapes and all those crimes happenings with tourist it’s because sometimes they hang out with wrong persons.Drugs and other contraband are not easily accessible in india as its here for Ex. Weed, people selling or dealings in drugs or other contrabands are very deeply involved in the crimes. Ya but I have to admit the fact that chances are high when u visit certain states such as UP BIHAR you might get robbed. The best advice I can give you is don’t go to rural or remote area on your own to explore, stay in the big cities and don’t stay in cheap hotels who offers 20$ or 30$ room per night, coz at cheap hotels sometimes any member of those hotels involved in some gangs who hits pn tourists specially on western tourist. I don’t know Denis where you from but I am sure where you live you might know at least couple indian background people, if you know any indian working with you or neighbors or even a store owner or a gas station attendent see if they have any local contact over there and who can help you with the advice and guidance while you visit there. That might solve the safety concerns as well as you will get some awesome exploration tips and experience.
